Producing hot water through solar heat:
To fully utilize the massive amount of sunlight available to Mali and to save electricity (using therefore less fuel and reducing pollution), three solar water heaters were installed Teriya Bugu:
- One at the dispensary/maternity with a capacity of about 100 liters of water that can heat water to 80 °C on sunny days,
- Another in the restaurant’s kitchen of 200 liters
- A third unit provides hot water to 4 rooms.

Solar energy for irrigation:
These panels are covered with silicon cells that convert solar energy into electrical energy.
Two sets of solar panels generate electrical current used to operate pumps in the River.
The river water drawn allows the watering of our acres of ornamental gardens and orchards thus helping to provide an atmosphere at Teriya Bugu of an oasis paradise!
And these solar pumps still operating after more than 25 years, have saved nearly 7,500 liters of diesel per year, compared to the use of pumps using electric or diesel!

Cooking with wood charcoal:
Families in Malian villages burn mostly wood or wood charcoal for cooking.
Some of the 200,000 Eucalyptus trees planted at Teriya Bugu in the 60’s were unusable as timber.
This portion of the trees with trunks that are not straight or long enough are made into charcoal and used at Teriya Bugu itself or sold in town.
This resource of wood is renewable because if one cuts the trees correctly at their base, they put out new branches from the stumps (“rejects”).
Within a few years, these rejects either produce straight trunks large enough to serve as timber or again twisted branches to use as charcoal or cooking wood.
Sunshine, CO2 in the air, rain water, and minerals in the soil provide all that is necessary to renew this resource in a few years.

Biogas for cooking and compost production
This installation patented by CIRAD (a French research center working with developing countries to tackle international agricultural and development issues) has been in place since 1988 transforming garbage (animal and vegetable) from the farm at Teriya Bugu. That's two 25m3 digesters that operate through the fermentation of waste producing up to 40m3 of methane daily.
Biogas obtained is stored in two flexible containers that each hold 50m3 of gas pressurized with sandbags for the use of several gas stoves at Teriya Bugu.
The fermentation’s residue serves as compost, applied at the foot of bananas plants and other fruit trees.
