Sustainable turism at Teriya Bugu

 

Teriya Bugu and Responsible Tourism :

In 2003, AMARD, a recognized Malian NGO, inherited Teriya Bugu and faced three major problems:

  • How to preserve the jobs of 48 workers, knowing that the revenues from the center, which was designed to be mainly experimental, were virtually zero with high expenses?
  • How to empower workers and an entire village basically kept in dependency for almost 20 years?
  • How to sustain and enhance the significant inheritance left by Father Verspieren while respecting the values of his commitment?

Teriya Bugu gradually became an oasis in the bush thanks to the efforts of local people working alongside Father Verspieren, pumping water from the river and raising major capital. Seeing the major infrastructure left behind by the Father, the idea came up to convert the farm into an experimental facility as well as a functional tourist site, serving local development.

The inhabitants, totally uninitiated to the hotel business and tourism industry but highly motivated, have provided most of the human resources necessary for the proper functioning of the Teriya Bugu Center and with a few improvements, existing infrastructure provided the capability to accommodate groups and tourists.

Meanwhile, the family and friends of Father Verspieren have committed themselves to the sustainability of the project for the benefit of the local people by creating the Association of Friends of Father Bernard Verspieren. This association, which guarantees the legacy of the founder, supports AMARD by providing assistance in strategic thinking for the future of Teriya Bugu, seeking funding from individuals and companies, recruitment for International Solidarity Volunteers to empower of the Malian teams and helping with managerial accountability.


Why Responsible Tourism?

As the first line of the budget, wages are the primary form of redistribution of the proceeds from tourism. As a responsible employer, the AMARD wants to model an exemplary observance of labor laws. All employees are under contract and included in the social security system, which is rarely the case in a developing country such as Mali.

Not only does Teriya Bugu create jobs internally, it is also an important outlet in the area for agricultural producers and local artisans who are regularly solicited for various jobs. The AMARD makes local sourcing a priority, an effective way to boost the area’s economy. As a project of responsible tourism, Teriya Bugu is a real economic engine affecting a radius of thirty kilometers (18 miles).

The benefits derived from tourism are also used to finance community activities such as the school and the clinic. Thanks to tourism, hundreds of children receive a quality education in the bush and thousands of people can benefit from quality medical care.

In addition to community activities, Teriya Bugu also uses the revenue generated by tourism to fund village infrastructure, building new homes and maintaining the electrical and drinking water systems.

After just 7 years of operation, the Teriya Bugu Center has emerged as major center of responsible tourism in Mali and throughout West Africa: it was also one of three locations chosen for the IFST 2008 (International Forum of Solidarity Tourism) workshops.

It is now the biggest employer in the circle of Bla, with more than 70 permanent employees. Priority is given to empowering its workers to be able to meet their own basic needs because to date, the organization is still supported by Volunteers for International Solidarity. With the majority of employees coming from the village of Teriya Bugu and surrounding villages, the project has to date an impact directly or indirectly, on 7,000 people.
